Amsterdam North and Nieuwendam

A part of the city located at the northern site of the water the IJ which wasn't that favourite over the years. Nowadays it has become a place where companies, artists and inhabitants are keen on living and working.

 

In the fourteenth century this part used to be a swampy area where executed persons’ bodies were displayed in a tree in order to frighten and restrain people from doing criminal activities. It became an industrial harbour area at the end of the nineteenth century. Café Wilhelminadok still refers to a huge previous ADM dock which was in progress along the IJ shore from the beginning of the twentieth century. A village named Vogeldorp was especially built for the ADM and Draka dock workers in the twenties. The guide is taking you along this village. You'll encounter a mosque, the oldest city forest of Amsterdam, Tuindorp Nieuwendam and the Purmer Square. There you'll see houses and public buildings designed according to Amsterdam School and Waterland architecture. You will also encounter the newly arisen buildings such as flats and the new film museum Eye at the previous Shell area. .
