Haarlem

Haarlem, the city where the seventeenth century Belgian painter Frans Hals came to live in his fourth. He was one of the first painters who painted his models in non-formal poses. Other painters of his time portrayed their models in rigid, formal positions. Haarlem is also a city of writers and printers. The city along the Spaarne which is the most central square, the Grote Markt, formerly 't Sant called in the 13th and 14th centuries. There is also the Great or St. Bavo church where Mozart played the organ during his trip through the Netherlands at the age of 10 in1766. The former meat market on the square, is part of the Frans Hals Museum today. The guide is taking you along lovely almshouses and courtyards.
